Sixth Graders Study Effects of Erosion

Sixth Graders are studying the effects of erosion and the best method to prevent erosion in Science.  They used two liter bottles, turned them on their side, cut open a hole, and filled them to the cap with soil.  Some bottles had a layer of rocks placed on top of the soil, some had a layer of sticks and leaves, some had plants grown inside and a control group had nothing inside.  The girls then poured increasing volumes of water into the bottles and measured the runoff. They learned that planting ground cover is the most effective means of preventing erosion.
