At Villa, students are taught that leadership is primarily related to the power of their influence. Internalizing this concept, we believe, is the foundation to future success. Learning to lead is a challenging and empowering experience. By exploring, building their skills, and providing opportunities to apply their knowledge, Villa empowers young women to lead with confidence and purpose.
Grades K-2 Leadership Program – The Leader in Me
The K-2 Leadership program is based on Sean Covey’s book, The 7 Habits of Happy Kids and is rooted in the IHM Charism of Love, Creative Hope, and Fidelity as well as virtues that make us such great children of God. Sean Covey believes that the 7 Habits are leadership qualities all students can learn and that developing these leadership skills will prepare students for the future.
The program was designed by Villa teachers to encourage girls to think of leadership not as a position and to help them understand that they are a part of something bigger than themselves.
Developing leadership skills from a young age equips children with the confidence, decision-making abilities, and sense of responsibility needed to positively influence their peers, school and local communities, and the world around them as well as foster their own spiritual growth. Teaching children leadership principles, such as effective communication, problem-solving, and teamwork, not only benefits them academically, but also makes a meaningful difference in their everyday lives. This program is done in two parts each month. Part one is done with each individual homeroom where we learn about a habit in the book, have a scripture connection, and story. Part two is done with the grade level of K-2 where the students are led in a lesson tying the habit for the month with an IHM Charism/virtue as well as a whole group activity. Learning from other students offers a new perspective on leadership qualities for the girls in hopes that they can take what they are learning and apply it in their own lives.
Grades 3-5 Leadership Program – RACE with Grace and Gratitude
Students in grades 3-5 participate in the RACE with Grace and Gratitude Program, learning the importance of community support to help prepare them for middle school.
RACE is an acronym for Responsibility, Academic Excellence, Catholic Identity, and Empowerment.
During their lessons, teachers break down the pillars and students discuss ways in which they can help them to grow into the confident and competent young women they were created to be.
