Second Grade Students Take Service Trip to Saint Martha Manor
The Second Grade students visited Saint Martha Manor in Downingtown on Monday with their teachers and Sister Patricia for their service trip to sing Christmas carols.
After singing, Sister Patricia encouraged the girls to interact with the patients and ask them what they wanted for Christmas. One person told a student that she wanted “A hug,” which immediately upon hearing the answer, the little girl hugged her. “You could tell how happy she was after,” said Sister. “It was so sweet.”
Following their visit, the students have been working on a reflective writing piece as part of their service learning experience. “The girls are working on a “what, why and how” reflection piece,” said Mrs. Thompson. “They will focus on what they did, why they did it and how it made them feel.”
“Students who take the time to reflect on service-learning experiences will get more from those experiences,” says Sister Patricia. “Reflection helps students thoughtfully process their community work. It helps more fully who they are and what they are called to do.”
