Kindergarten Students Create Shelves for their Classroom Elf in a Cross-Curricular STEM Project
The Kindergarten students recently finished a cross-curricular project in STEM, ELA, and Math to create shelves for their classroom Elf on the Shelf, Snowflake – Snowflake wrote the girls a note asking for a special shelf for the classroom.
The girls had to use materials in the classroom, “whatever they wanted,” said Miss Beck, Villa’s Kindergarten Teacher, to create the shelf. “We always incorporate ELA and Math into our STEM activities, so we did that with this project too.” The girls first re-read The Elf on the Shelf book, and “since we are learning addition in Math, they then had to use their addition skills to count up all the materials they were planning to use to create their shelf.”
When their projects were complete, Snowflake took turns trying out all the shelves in their classroom by flying around on a candy cane. “Some shelves failed the test,” said Miss Beck, “but it only encouraged the girls to use their critical thinking skills and think of a new plan for next time.”
